Prep Time: 2 MinBaking Time: 5 MinTotal Time: 7 Min

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Using a Microplane zester, grate a small amount of orange zest, and set aside. Toast 1 slice multigrain sourdough bread (see Note #1).
  2. While bread is toasting, add ricotta cheese to a small glass mixing bowl, and whisk until creamy. Add salt, pepper, and a pinch of fresh orange zest, and whisk well until combined.
  3. Spread ricotta mixture on toasted bread, then drizzle olive oil, and top with Kumquat Marmalade, and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Use your favorite whole grain or multigrain country style sourdough bread. We used Trader Joe’s Multi Grain Sourdough with Sunflower & Sesame Seeds. To make this gluten-free, replace sourdough with a whole grain gluten free bread.
  2. We used this Fresh Blood Orange Olive Oil from Temecula Olive Oil Company in this recipe. Another great option is this Blood Orange California Citrus Oil by O Olive Oil.
  3. Try our easy recipe for Kumquat Marmalade, which can be made in advance. The tartness of this jam pairs perfectly with the ricotta. Or substitute with store bought orange marmalade.
  4. Makes 1 serving. Recipe can be adjusted based on the number of servings needed.

Step by Step Instructions

Ricotta Toast with Kumquat Marmalade prep ingredients

PREPARATION

Organize all your tools and ingredients before you begin. Getting all your ingredients in one place at the beginning will shorten your prep time.

STEP 1a

Using a Microplane zester, grate a small amount of orange zest (optional but yummy), and set aside.

Note: You will need only enough for a pinch!

STEP 1b

Toast 1 slice multigrain sourdough bread (see Note below). While bread is toasting, prepare the ricotta.

Note: Use your favorite whole grain or multigrain country style sourdough bread. We used Trader Joe’s Multi Grain Sourdough with Sunflower & Sesame Seeds. To make this gluten-free, replace sourdough with a whole grain gluten free bread.

STEP 2

To prepare the ricotta, add ¼ cup part-skim milk ricotta cheese (or whole milk ricotta cheese) to a small glass mixing bowl, and whisk until creamy. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt (or to taste), a scant pinch of ground white pepper (or black pepper), and a pinch of fresh orange zest, and whisk well until combined.

STEP 3

Spread ricotta mixture on toasted bread, then drizzle ¼ teaspoon blood orange olive oil (or extra virgin olive oil - see Note A below), and top with 1 tablespoon Kumquat Marmalade (see Note B below).

Note A: We used this Fresh Blood Orange Olive Oil from Temecula Olive Oil Company in this recipe. Another great option is this Blood Orange California Citrus Oil by O Olive Oil. For another great substitution, use a great quality extra virgin olive oil (we like Colonna Classic Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil).

Note B: Try our easy recipe for Kumquat Marmalade, which can be made in advance. The tartness of this jam pairs perfectly with the ricotta. Or substitute with 100% fruit store bought kumquat marmalade or orange marmalade

Blog Comments & Tips

Yummy 5 Ingredient Breakfast & Snack!

Ricotta toast has become especially popular in the last couple of years. So we jumped on the recipe craze and gave it a twist of our own. Our Ricotta Toast with Kumquat Marmalade is both sweet and savory, and filled with lots of nutritious elements.

We used multigrain (or whole grain) country sourdough bread, and spread on some calcium rich part-skim ricotta cheese. To top off this wholesome foundation, we add some of our own Kumquat Marmalade (which uses no refined sugar). The colors are bright, just like its flavor!

Whole milk ricotta cheese is an excellent source of calcium, selenium, and phosphorus, along with many other essential minerals. With only 80 calories in a ¼ cup serving, it contains 4 grams of protein, 6 grams of carbohydrates, only 60 grams of sodium, and 15% of the RDI for calcium. Add the health benefits from kumquats, and you have a well balanced breakfast or snack that will give you energy for hours!

Did you know that only 5 kumquats (100 grams) contain 73% of the RDI for Vitamin C?!

Add in the 2 grams of protein, 6.5 grams of fiber, 6% vitamin A, and smaller amounts of B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and zinc, and you have a powerhouse of antioxidants in this marmalade.

Now you have the recipe, ingredients, and equipment, but how do you ensure the best results from our recipe?

Our 5 tips to making a great Ricotta Toast with Kumquat Marmalade:

  1. Use only fresh ingredients.

  2. Good quality multi-grain country bread that has texture (or your favorite bread).

  3. Don’t skip the orange zest (or lemon zest), to give it a bright taste.

  4. Whisk the ricotta mixture to give it that creamy smooth texture.

  5. Try our Kumquat Marmalade recipe to give this ricotta toast that extra special tart and sweet flavor!
